In 2025, the first CBD book, explaining the founding principles of CBD will be published by Edward Elgar. Culture Based Development is the long-awaited economics of WHY people do what they do. The answer is – because of culture. The answer behind WHY culture is: for evolutionary gains, we devised the creation of culture to alleviate our psychological pain from uncertainty. This pain is the trigger of our cultural biases and their endogenous amplification over time and space.
The book: 'CULTURE BASED DEVELOPMENT - Modelling Cultural Bias in Economic Choice' is a book that leads you step by step to economic modelling of the weird cultural WHY. CBD postulates that culture matters in an evolutionary manner for people: people stick to culture as the sedative for the psychological pain from uncertainty. Yet, people possess different culture in their identity in the form of cultural capital. The perception about this differences in possessed cultural capital is the source of the important cultural distance that is the source of Gary Becker’s taste for discrimination and the foundation of the limits imposed by Ariel Rubinstein’s permissible set on what people at all consider choosing. CBD’s Cultural Entropy measures the pivotal characteristic of the local cultural capital to allow those ‘different’ to survive locally. Thus, Cultural Entropy defines the degree of local cultural bias in economic choice.
The book is divided in two parts: (i) the ‘Culture-Based'-explaining part (covering the topics of Culture, Cultural Capital, Cultural Distance, Cultural Entropy and their derived Cultural Bias, and how these notions stand in the existing related literature); and (ii) the ‘Development’-explaining part – which consists of a block of direct developments and a block of indirect developments based on cultural bias.
