ποΈ EAEPE 2025 β A Milestone for the Culture-Based Development (CBD) Paradigm
The European Association for Evolutionary Political Economy (EAEPE) Annual Conference 2025 in Athens proudly featured two special sessions dedicated to the Culture-Based Development (CBD) paradigm, marking a significant moment in its academic evolution.
This session celebrated the launch of the first comprehensive CBD book, with keynote presentations from three of the most distinguished scholars in the field of Old Institutional Economics (OIE):
Prof. Bill Waller, Editor of the Journal of Economic Issues
Prof. Wolfram Elsner, (among else) winner of the Veblen-Commons Award 2025, Association for Evolutionary Economics
Prof. John B. Hall, former President of the Association for Institutional Thought (AFIT)
Their insights highlighted the theoretical richness, interdisciplinary relevance, and policy potential of the CBD paradigm within the broader tradition of institutional and evolutionary economics.
EAEPE 2025 also marked the inauguration of the Annual CBD Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Development of the CBD Paradigm. This new tradition celebrates individuals who have made exceptional scholarly and practical contributions to advancing CBD thinking.
We are proud to announce that the first recipient of the CBD Award is Prof. John B. Hall, in recognition of his lifelong commitment to cultural and institutional analysis and his inspiring support for the CBD community.

The second CBD-related session was the traditional panel on methodological advances in evolutionary economics, co-organized by Prof. John B. Hall and Dr. Annie Tubadji. This session brought together leading voices in the field to explore cutting-edge approaches and frameworks that deepen our understanding of economic evolution, with a particular emphasis on the role of culture and institutions.
Together, these sessions underscored the growing influence of the CBD paradigm and its integration into the heart of evolutionary and institutional economics.
